Teri Lund:
I have worked out at Geometry for the past three years. I have been in Pilates for the past 7 years, but never with the same results that I have experienced at Geometry. At Geometry I now have firm arms (NOT EVEN AS A TEEN) and I am two sizes smaller in pants and skirts WITHOUT dropping more than a couple of pounds. Friends and relatives always ask me if I've been dieting, but no I work out 2x a week at Geometry. What is the difference or why is Geometry such a great place to work out. The instructors are well trained. They are able to adapt your workout to you. I've worked out with those with troubled pregnancies or injuries and the instructors at Geometry work hard at modifying their workout while paying attention to my own to ensure that I'm doing it properly. The instructors are flexible and continue to update their own training and education on a regular basis. They are very good at accomodating to your schedule and needs as much as possible. They really focus not only on the basics but on how you can improve what you are doing to maximize your workout. They provide pointers and ques just when they are needed and are individual not the typical Pilates (drop your ribs) but specific to you and what you are doing (drop the left shoulder and exhale now!). A few years ago my husband was struggling with back pain. His doctor told him he needed weight based training to counter the "computer slump". I finally convinced him to try Pilates at Geometry. Prior to that he'd always seen Pilates as a "women's workout". But at Geometry. he liked the atomosphere and the results (little pain and a full night sleep). A little about the atomosphere at Geometry. It is in the Pearl (never a bad place to be). While there is only on street parking it is rarely difficult to find a place to park. The studio itself has a the trendy loft feel of NYC, but it is definately Portland Organic. There is a variety of equipment and complimentary pieces for use.
Randy Lund: The week before my son’s first birthday I was sitting in my office chair and suddenly I had back pain that was incredible. I could not stand nor walk. When I finally got home that night I had to use my wife’s exercise pole to walk from room to room.
I missed two days of work because I could not move. My doctor gave me pain pills, and said I simply needed to do more exercise.
I began pilates and within a year I had gained back my flexibility and some of the pain had eased so that I could at least sleep through most of the night.
However I travel a great deal for work and I found that each time I was out of town I was back in pain again.
Then I switched to Geometry. I was a disappointed at first because the new instructor took me back to the beginning of my work out. She said that while I was doing the exercises I really needed to focus more on my core and take the work out of my back. She also spent a lot of time teaching me how to stretch at home and improve my at home workout.
I take a private once a week (when I’m in town) and I work out at home. And since I switched to Geometry I am pain free at night. It is great to get a good night’s sleep. I try to stretch each night using the exercises I’ve been taught. I’m also amazed because I continue to get insights on how to change my routine and improve upon it.
What is great is not only am I more flexible, but I’m stronger and toned. I think it is a great exercise routine and a good basis for other activities such as running, bicycling, skiing and swimming
Susan Sowles: Many years ago I had increasing pain and stiffness in my right knee. A friend suggested Pilates as a way to increase strength and flexibility in my knee -- and everywhere else as well. I was pleased with how much stronger I became. After some years that studio closed and I followed my teacher to Geometry. Although I lost my leg to amputation last year, I continue to work out with Alicia. The strength, balance and flexibility have gained with Pilates training have made it possible for me to continue teaching and doing all the things I love to do. Alicia has been very creative at adapting Pilates exercises to meet my needs. The variations seem endless. I recommend Pilates to everyone who would like to be stronger, more flexible, have better balance and easier movement. It has worked for me with my less than perfect body and is sure to work for you, too, no matter what shape you are in when you start.
Gail Meyer: This place is AWESOME!! I have tried physical therapy, yoga, weights, chiropractic ~ you name it ~ and nothing, nothing, I mean absolutely NOTHING gave me relief of lower back pain and chronic upper shoulder/neck strain like this. Alicia is great: she targets your sore spots with specific stretching and strengthening techniques and within three weeks, I was feeling better than I had in my twenties (more than just a few years ago). Don't stop with the pilates ~ the Gyrotonic is my all-time favorite. I swear that it reverses those knarly tied up knots deep in the shoulders and necks. I almost cried with relief during my first few sessions ~ not from pain, but from the release of the deep strain. Alicia is an absolute doll; she's very knowledgeable, agreeable, and flexible with her schedule. I swear this is the foutain of youth. Don't delay ~ give it a try. You won't regret it.
